Future Aquatics and Community Centre Naming Survey

In 2018/2019, the City of New Westminster undertook an engagement process with urban Indigenous peoples living and/or working in New Westminster to hear feedback on how the new aquatics and community centre can be more welcoming for Indigenous peoples using the facility.

The results were compiled into a final report, including a series of recommendations, which can be found on our website. One of the recommendations coming out of this engagement was to incorporate Indigenous language into the facility.

As part of a larger commitment to reconciliation, the City of New Westminster has established a Joint Naming Advisory Panel (the “Panel”) to explore options for a name for the facility, including the option for an Indigenous name. The Panel expressed the importance of story-telling and having the name of the facility reflect the stories of what citizens of New Westminster will do at the facility. In particular, the Panel wants to ask New Westminster residents to reflect on some questions:
  • What is this space for you?
  • What is this space for your family?
  • What do you want this space to be?
